Motorola Canopy is not Wi-Fi. It's a professional PtMP system with a proprietary protocol built at Motorola Labs specifically for fixed-wireless operators (WISPs). The goal: stable link where plain Wi-Fi would have died ages ago.
All APs in a network use the same GPS clock. Transmission and reception are separated in time so access points do not interfere with one another. Six APs on one mast provide 360° coverage without internal interference.
Canopy does not use 802.11. Its signal is not Wi-Fi, ordinary scanners cannot detect it, and it has its own MAC format. Interference resistance is much higher, while nearby Wi-Fi noise has little effect.
The AP covers a 60° sector, so its receiver sees what is directly ahead. This improves resistance to noise and permits several APs on the same mast.
Canopy was designed as carrier-grade WISP equipment. Up to 200 SMs can be attached to one AP (realistically 60–100). Our 8-SM kit is a light "small operator" setup.
Without a reflector, an SM reaches up to 3.2 km. With the Canopy Passive Reflector Dish, the familiar white dish, line-of-sight range increases to 25 km. The reflector is passive and contains no electronics.
Moulded plastic housing, protection from rain and snow, and an operating range of −40 to +55 °C. Canopy was sold for towers in Siberia, Alaska and northern Canada. It operates in sunlight, frost and driving rain.
Part number 5250SMBC identifies the SM with Advanced Logic: an extended chipset, support for Canopy R8+ firmware releases and improved QoS algorithms. The basic SM without BC does not have these capabilities.
No special software is required. Connect the SM to an ACPSSW-09B PoE injector and its second port to a laptop. Open 169.254.1.1 in a browser and use the root login without a password. Frequency, network SSID and encryption are then configured through the web interface.
At the air interface, Canopy supports standard DES and optional AES encryption. DES is sufficient for farms and garden communities; AES is used for industrial sites.
The central node of a Canopy 5.2 GHz UNII-1 PtMP network. Each AP covers 60°; six APs on a mast provide 360° coverage. One unit remains in stock for a complete 5200APG and 5250SMBC network.
MPN 5200APG · 5.150–5.250 GHz (UNII-1) · TDD · NEMA 4
The Motorola Canopy 5200APG is the central access point of a proprietary PtMP network. It uses the 5.150–5.250 GHz UNII-1 band, TDD and GPS synchronization. Its 60° sector allows six APs on one mast to cover 360° without mutual interference. It serves up to 200 subscriber modules with 10 Mbit/s aggregate throughput per AP. Configure it through a web browser on an ordinary laptop connected by Ethernet. Power is supplied at 24 V through the included ACPSSW-09B PoE injector.
Subscriber module with Advanced Logic. Eight units are in stock, suitable for an eight-client network using one 5200APG access point. Each includes an ACPSSW-09B power supply.
MPN 5250SMBC · 5.250–5.350 GHz · Advanced Logic · NEMA 4
Motorola Canopy BC-series subscriber module with Backward-Compatible Advanced Logic. It works with a 5200APG access point in the 5.250–5.350 GHz band. Advanced Logic provides an extended chipset, improved modulation, packet QoS marking and synchronization. Compatible with the last official Canopy R8 firmware. Line-of-sight range is up to 3.2 km without a reflector and up to 25 km with a Canopy Passive Reflector Dish. Standard DES and optional AES encryption. Eight units are in stock.
MPN ACPSSW-09B · 9 units in stock · one per module
The original Motorola Canopy power supply is a small grey adapter with two RJ-45 sockets: one connects to the radio and carries Ethernet and 24 V power; the other connects to a switch or laptop and carries data only. Canopy requires this supply to deliver power up the mast through twisted-pair cable. Stock includes one supply per module: 9 units, one for the AP and eight for the SMs.
One 5200APG access point on the central mast serves eight 5250SMBC subscriber modules, one at each client site. Every module needs its own ACPSSW-09B PoE injector. A network diagram and installation steps follow.
A 10–20 m mast in the centre of the site. Mount the 5200APG near the top and install the GPS antenna separately. The ACPSSW-09B in the control cabinet supplies 24 V over twisted-pair cable.
Connect the AP to the PoE injector and the second port to a laptop. Open 169.254.1.1 in a browser and log in as root without a password. Set the frequency and Sync Input to GPS, enable DES/AES encryption and assign an IP address.
Install each 5250SMBC at a client site and point it toward the mast. Range is up to 3.2 km without a dish and up to 25 km with a Canopy Reflector Dish. Clear optical line of sight is required.
SM scans the air, finds the AP by SSID and sync, requests registration. AP assigns an IP from its pool, QoS (Max/Sustained/Burst) kicks in. The network is up.
Per the official Motorola Canopy R8 User Guide and WISP Brochure. One of those cases where a 2007 datasheet is the last word: Advanced Logic SMs still work.

Motorola Canopy was designed for WISP operators and industrial sites. It is used in Russian villages, farms, garden communities and remote production facilities where fibre is impractical or expensive and mobile coverage is unreliable.
One AP on the association's mast serves 8–60 homes. A replacement for carrier 4G which is absent in the forest. Cheap, stable, no tariff.
Links between a barn, hangar, workshop and operator's house. Video surveillance, SCADA monitoring of watering systems and grain accounting. Canopy continues operating in rain.
Quarries, grain elevators, logging sites and roadside filling stations. Dispatch and monitoring data sent to a central point. AES encryption for critical data.
Start of a small wireless operator in a village of 50–200 subscribers. Canopy was the original carrier-grade WISP standard before mass Wi-Fi.
Wireless perimeter cameras and links between a checkpoint and control room. Encryption and a 60° sector protect against external scans.
Data transmission from autonomous weather stations to a central hub. One SM with a dish reflector provides a stable 25 km link without SIM cards or subscription fees.
Shops and kiosks outside wired internet coverage. Canopy reliably handles POS terminals with no packet loss in bad weather.
Backhaul links for small mobile base stations. Canopy with a dish provides a direct 25 km link without renting fibre or relying on 3G/4G.
Canopy is a classic 5.2 GHz system focused on stability. NanoStation is Ubiquiti's modern 2.4 GHz airMAX range with 150+ Mbit/s throughput. Several first-generation NanoStation 5 units and a pair of NanoStation M2 units are in stock for PtP bridges or a PtMP client sector.

Motorola Canopy is a proprietary PtMP system using 5.2, 5.4 and 5.7 GHz in the 100 series and 2.4 GHz in the 200 series. Motorola developed it in the early 2000s and produced it until 2011; it then moved to Cambium Networks as PMP100. Unlike Wi-Fi, Canopy uses TDD with GPS synchronization: all APs share one clock, transmission and reception are separated in time, and APs do not interfere with one another. Interference resistance is much higher than Wi-Fi, keeping the link stable in noisy radio environments.
In stock: one CANOPY 5200APG access point at RUB 84,000; eight CANOPY 5250SMBC Advanced Logic subscriber modules at RUB 28,000 each; and nine ACPSSW-09B power supplies at RUB 6,100 each, included one per device. This is a ready 5.2 GHz PtMP network for eight clients.
Advanced Logic ("extended logic", "BC" suffix in the part number) is the extended Canopy chipset. Compared to the basic SM, it provides better modulation, extended QoS and sync features, and supports firmware of newer Canopy Release 8+ and Cambium PMP100 releases. For the end user, this means more stable connectivity at long distances and higher throughput.
Without a reflector, an SM using its standard antenna reaches up to 3.2 km with clear optical line of sight. With the passive Canopy Reflector Dish, approximately 25 dBi gain, range is up to 25 km. Actual range depends on mast height, terrain and radio interference. Canopy can operate where ordinary Wi-Fi becomes unreliable.
The theoretical limit is 200 SMs per AP. In practice, 60–100 are recommended depending on traffic. More can be used for light telemetry, POS or home internet loads. The eight-SM kit suits a small farm, garden community or production site needing stable links to several remote locations.
NanoStation M2 is a modern Ubiquiti 2.4 GHz airMAX unit offering 150+ Mbit/s instead of Canopy's 10 Mbit/s, a modern web interface and 802.11 compatibility. It lacks GPS synchronization and has lower interference resistance in noisy radio environments. Choose M2 for speed in a clear environment and Canopy for stability in a noisy one. The two can be combined: Canopy for the main link and NanoStation for short client links.
Yes. Configure it through the web interface. Connect the SM or AP to an ACPSSW-09B PoE injector by Ethernet, and the injector's second port to a laptop. Open 169.254.1.1 in a browser and log in as root without a password. Set frequency, Sync Input, network SSID, encryption and QoS. Only a browser is required.
Canopy Release 8, Motorola's last official firmware from 2007, and the later Cambium PMP100 Release 11 are compatible with our 5200APG and 5250SMBC Advanced Logic modules. Firmware, BAM/Prizm configuration tools and technical documentation are available in the Cambium support archives. The equipment is mature and stable; with proper installation, a Canopy network can operate for 10–15 years.
